A portable data storage device which can interface with a remote computer and can securely store data by reference to one or more biometric parameters. Such biometric parameters are encrypted by reference to a bioencryption algorithm. The device is disposed with a biometric recognizing apparatus which reads biometric data presented by user. This biometric data is then encrypted in combination with a factory preset parameter in accordance with a predefined encryption algorithm. Access to the data requires a user to present the authorized biometric parameter.
